Resolutions for your Small Group
We're back! After a few weeks off for the holidays, we're back and ready for the new year!
Have you made any goals or resolutions for this year? I love how a new year brings a new starting point. It drives us toward refocusing and in many ways trying harder again. Not only is the start of the year a great time to refocus your life, but it is also the perfect time to refocus your small group.
Maybe you have had your first moments together in this new year to catch up on all holiday activities. You have had your catch up moments to rekindle the friendships. But it doesn’t have to end there. What if you take the opportunity to refocus your small group towards growth? Here are two things to think about.
Encourage. How can you better encourage one another? Remember, everyone receives love and encouragement in different forms. Take the opportunity to ask and understand how each person feels encouraged. Are there specific areas your group needs to be encouraged? Maybe it is for individual needs? Or maybe your group as a whole needs to grow in a specific area?
Challenge. Growth happens when our current status is challenged. How can you challenge your group to grow? What specific areas will you focus in? Here are a few ideas.
- Studying the Word
Challenge and encouragement must go hand in hand. Focusing your role as leader through the lens of these mentalities opens the doors for tremendous growth in your group. Don’t settle for what you have always done. Strive for growth. Lead your group in great encouragement. Remind them of Hebrews 13:20-21:
“Now may the God of peace, who through the blood of the eternal covenant brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep, equip you with everything good for doing his will, and may he work in us what is pleasing to him, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen.”
Spiritual growth does not depend on our strength alone. In God’s gracious gift to us, he provides all that we need to grow. As leaders, we can lead our people to growth through encouragement and challenge.
