“Girls”…Now Who Are You?
The other day we were trying to think of a different name to call you than “girls”. Girls just seems so young and immature sounding sometimes. Like you still play dress up and have no idea that there are painful and hard things in this world. Like you aren’t capable of huge things.
So I searched through the Thesaurus and I have to say that I was a little underwhelmed by the other terms offered up for you. Here’s a look at some of the things I found.
Well if we want to go very literal in the developmental world, yes. You are an adolescent. But that’s really just about a number.
Which literally means a girl attending school. I feel fairly confident you are all in school…unless you’re a child genius who graduated six years early. Congratulations, if that is you. But even still, schoolgirl is not really what I was searching for.
I just want to be upfront about this. I definitely do not think you are damsels in distress. Of course, I do agree and have experienced this life being hard. That’s not what I’m talking about. If you are a believer, the God of this universe lives in you. Therefore, you are not flailing around in distress on this earth because the One who controls all of it has you.
I for real cannot say this without a Scottish accent. So although lassie does mean young girl, the way that it sounds in my head knocks it out of contention for what we will refer to you as.
So that kind of just leads us back to girls. We might also call you ladies at times or even our people. But let’s talk about what that actually means if you have turned from your sin and trusted Christ for salvation…
You are a child a God John 1:12
You are complete in Christ Colossians 2:10
You are beautifully and wonderfully made Psalm 139:14
God has started good works in you and He will perfect them Philippians 1:6
You have been filled with the Holy Spirit 1 Corinthians 3:16
You have been called to make disciples Matthew 28:18-20
You have been called to love…everyone Matthew 22:37-39
You have been called to care for widows and orphans James 1:27
You have been called to love the least Matthew 25:40
You have been called to learn and grow from older women Titus 2:3-5
You have been called to act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly Micah 6:8
You have been called to go to the nations Acts 1:8
You are not a piece of God’s handiwork that He has placed to the side. You are of great value and worth and filled with the potential to flip this world upside down because the power of God Himself is at work in you.
You are not too small. You are not too young. You are not too inexperienced. So don’t live like it. Don’t believe the lie that you aren’t ready.
“Now to him who is able to do immeasurable more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.” Ephesians 3:20-21 (ESV)
This is the truth. This includes girls. This includes you. This is our God. - Becca
